Fun Times at Work

I'm sure this will loose a little in the retelling of it, but what happened today at work had me giggling for hours this afternoon.

My boss, SM, had filled a little bowl on her desk with cinnimon and sugar covered mixed nuts. I walked by, looked, and said, "Ew, where's the chocolate?", as that is what she usually has in the bowl. Another person standing by complained about the nuts as well, and we stood there just talking for a few minutes.

SM's desk is right in front of our president's office. SH, the president, apparently loves the cinnimon and sugar mixed nuts. As we were standing there talking, SH goes walking by, and my boss, SM, yells out to him, "SH! Everyone's making fun of your nuts!"

*cue complete silence in the office*

Co-worker: Oh look, the squirrel is looking for a place to bury his nuts!
Me: Oh, really. :|

This is long, but oh-so-good!

I Know You, by Henry Rollins

I know you
you were too short
you had bad skin
you couldn't talk to them very well
words didn't seem to work
they lied when they came out of your mouth
you tried so hard to understand them
you wanted to be part of what was happening
you saw them having fun
and it seemed like such a mystery
almost magic
made you think that there was something wrong with you
you'd look in the mirror trying to find it
you thought that you were ugly
and that everyone was looking at you
so you learned to be invisible
to look down
to avoid conversation
the hours
days
weekends
ah the weekend nights, alone
where were you
in the basement?
in the attic?
in your room?
working some job?
just to have something to do
just to have a place to put yourself
just to have a way to get away from them
a chance to get away from the ones that made you feel so strange and ill-at-ease inside yourself
did you ever get invited to one of their parties
you sat and wondered if you would go or not
for hours you imagined the scenarios that might transpire
they would laugh at you
if you would know what to do
if you would have the right things on
if they would notice that you came from a different planet
did you get all brave in your thoughts
like you were going to be able to go in there and deal with it
and have a great time
did you think that you might be "the life of the party"
that all these people were gonna talk to you
and you would find out that you were wrong
that you had a lot of friends
and you weren't so strange after all?
did you end up going
did they mess with you
did they single you out
did you find out that you were invited
because they thought you were so weird
yeah, I think I know you
you spent a lot of time full of hate
a hate that was pure as sunshine
a hate that saw for miles
a hate that kept you up at night
a hate that filled your every waking moment
a hate that carried you for a long time
yes I think I know you
you couldn't figure out what they saw and the way they lived
home was not home
your room was home
a corner was home
the place they weren't- that was home
I know you
you're sensitive
and you hide it, because you fear getting stepped on one more time
it seems that when you show a part of yourself that is the least bit vulnerable
someone takes advantage of you
one of them steps on you
they mistake kindness for weakness
but you know the difference
you've been the brunt of their weakness for years
and strength is something you know a bit about
because you had to be strong to keep yourself alive
you know yourself very well now
and you don't trust people
you know them too well
you try to find that "special person"
someone you can be with
someone you can touch
someone you can talk to
someone you won't feel so strange around
and you found that they don't really exist
you feel closer to people on movie screens
yeah, I think I know you
you spend a lot of time daydreaming
and people have made comment to that effect
telling you that you're "self-involved" and "self-centered"
but they don't know, do they
about the long nightshifts alone
about the years of keeping yourself company
all the nights you wrapped your arms around yourself
so you could imagine someone holding you
the hours of indecision
self-doubt
the intense depression
the blinding hate
the rage that made you stagger
the devastation of rejection
well
maybe they do know
but if they do
they sure do a good job of hiding it
it astounds you how they can be so smooth
how they seem to pass through life as if life itself was some divine gift
and it infuriates you to watch yourself with your apparent skill,
and finding every way possible to screw it up
for you, life is a long trip
terrifying and wonderful
birds sing to you at night
the rain and the sun
the changing seasons
are true friends
solitude is a hard won ally
faithful and patient
yeah, I think I know you

Today is a good day!

Sept 23-Oct 6, 2006 - Two week trip to Eastern Europe (Germany, Poland, Chech. Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and Austria)

March 18, 2008 - Made final credit card payment for the trip!

(I opened a card with an 18 month interest-free period, and only used it to pay for this trip.)

I got a promotion and a raise! Woot Woot!

Well, the title of this post pretty much says it all!

I started with the company on March 26, 2007 as an Office Assistant. I once found this job description on Metaquotes, but it describes my Office Assistant position perfectly: Establish and maintain safe distance between shit and fan. Sort paper clips as necessary. If you added, order office supplies, and do random projects you’d pretty much describe my normal daily routine.

Now, I will be an Accounts Payable Clerk. While I know I don’t want to do this for the rest of my life, it at least gets me the experience that I can take elsewhere. Sooner or later, I’ll get my butt into a grad program, and then on to bigger and better things.

The raise isn’t huge, but it will hopefully allevaite some of the financial strain I’ve been under. I usually stick to a pretty tight budget, but for the last two months, I’ve completely blown it. December I was $400 over budget (obviously some of that had to do with Christmas presents), and so far this month, I’m about $200 over budget. Oy! My rein in that spending urge! I was also told that usually around March/April time is when the company does it’s reviews/raises, and that I should expect a little more at that time! Sweet!

As I think I've mentioned here before, I work at a tomato and sauerkraut canning company. Yesterday, I was given the task of editing the recipes we've gathered in order to put them up on our website. Well, thank God someone thought of giving them an editing! The following is a sentence I found:

Saute chopped onions, celery, peppers, and garlic in love oil.

Now, where exactly would I find love oil in the store? Would that be in the section with the other oils? Or would that be in the section with the condoms? Just to see what kind of reaction I'd get, I was tempted to print out the recipe, take it to the store, and demand to know where I'd find the love oil!

Conversation at work...

Boss: Have you ever lost your phone before?
Me: Nope, you?
Boss: Yeah, I lost mine.
Me: Uh oh.
Boss: I found it though. It was in the toilet.
Me: Oh no, does it still work?
Boss: Yeah. *sniffs phone* But it smells like shit.

Random Bits and Pieces

- I've mailed in my application, credit report, and deposit for the apartment. I'm thinking I'll be moving in the middle of June. Just when I didn't want to move (I was hoping to move before it got really hot out).

- Speaking of hot, we've either matched or surpassed the record high temperatures the last two days. 90 degrees in May is just not cool.

- I'm headed up to the cabin for the long weekend. I can't wait!

- I got a new and bigger MP3 player (20G iRiver). I've been ripping songs from my CDs for the last week, and after going through most of my CDs, I have to wonder why I wasted money on them. Most of the time, I'd only find 1 or 2 songs worth ripping.

- If you haven't already, go watch Blood Diamonds. It's a good movie, despite Leonardo Dicaprio being in it.

- I kind of hate my job, but I can't quit because a)I haven't found anything else, b)nothing around here pays as much, and c)I'd look like a tard quitting after only 2 months.

I'm the receptionist at work. It doesn't matter if you are a distributor of our product, a telemarketing cold-call, or a person off the streets who has called us for information on our product, your call will start with me. From there, I'll either weed you out (ie the telemarketers), or I will pass you along to whoever will be able to help you. We only have one 'customer service' person, when she's at lunch there is a back-up person, but she still has her own job to do. Sometimes, there is just no one available to take the customer service calls. This is unfortunate, but it's just the way the cookie crumbles. I'll offer to put the person on hold, or ask them if they'd like the customer service voicemail.

Today...
Me: Ma'am, I'm sorry but both of our customer service agents are busy helping others. If you'd like, I can put you through to their voicemail so you can leave a message and they'll call you back as soon as their done?
Customer: I have a rotary phone.
Me: ...

I'm not quite sure what baffled me more, someone still having a rotary phone, or someone not understanding the concept of voicemail. Although, they are probably related, if she was old enough to still have a rotary phone, she's probably not likely to be all that technologically advanced to be familiar with voicemail.

Who knows.

I'm alive. Kind of. I'm starting to think my job title should have really been Everyone's Bitch. Basically, I'm getting the jobs no one else want to do, or doesn't have time to do. Whatever, maybe it won't be so bad once I know what I'm doing and can get into some kind of routine. Right now, I just feel like a chicken with it's head cut off.

After a few days of viewing apartments, my car issues, and the stress of learning a new job...I've decided to wait a month or so until I start back with the apartment hunting. I decided this after going about 2-3 days where every little thing made me cry or have a panic attack. God, I'm a tard.

I HAVE FOUND A JOB, I START MONDAY!!!

From the people I've talked to, I get a sense that this company, which is family owned and operated for 80-some years, really cares about it's employees and their ideas. A new generation of the family has recently taken over the daily running of the company, and they want to move the company into a more modern, progressive way of running things.

They told me that I'm over-qualified for the Office Assistant position. The new generation is currently restructuring the company(hence my position opening, it used to be a receptionist job), and with that new/more jobs will open up, which they fully expect me to take advantage of in the next year or so. They hoped that by hiring me in this position, I would be exposed to various aspects of the company (dealing with venders, customers, etc.) so when new positions become available, I'll find one that I like and would want to move to.

I'm really excited about this opportunity! I've met with the woman who will be my boss on several occasions, and I think we'll really get along. She has only been with the company since last September, and basically created her position, so she's still learning some aspects to the company herself.

The best thing about this job?

OMG, IT PAYS ENOUGH SO THAT I'LL BE ABLE TO MOVE OUT OF MY PARENT'S HOUSE VERY SOON!

Hmmm, now I'll have to figure out what to call the new company on here.
